We as humans are always moving. Looking for the next things to see, do, or hear. We’re creatures of habit too. Doing one thing over and over. When photographing on the streets of the city, I have particular areas that I gravitate towards—and stay for hours. This story is about Fortieth Street & Eighth Avenue.

The Prime Corner
The uniqueness of this corner is its distance from the Port Authority Bus Terminal—just across the street with people making their way through crowded sidewalks.
Most heads are pointed towards ground, focused on getting to their destination. Those who aren’t, notice the camera in my hands. Sometimes, they stop and ask questions to engage in conversation. Of those who do, one of the questions asked from time to time is “can you take my picture?”
The city has long been labeled a “melting pot.” I consider it more like a finely chopped salad with various leafy greens, veggies, nuts and fruits. Watching each of the flavors pass in front of you, can be an intriguing societal learning experience.
Opposite Corner
People watching and photographing isn’t something many are interested in, or want to do. No matter which of these four corners you stand on, the energy level is the same. Rush hours with big ebbs and flows. Quieting down to a trickle the balance of each day.
On The Run
Every city and town in the world has its own unique appeal. New York City is well known for its frenetic pace, with barely a moment to even eat. There are many protestations that bolster stories espousing such magnetism. It “never sleeps.” Of course, many cities around the world operate twenty-four hours everyday. And, population plays its part in whether a city or town is frantic or quaint. We all choose our preferred surroundings.
In full disclosure, had I not stood on these corners at the times I did—this story would be different. I’d probably be writing about the city’s slower pace. Go figure.
