Preamble
Before getting to the stuff below, would you care to examine two sets of verbs. I’ve had thoughts on which of these best describes the action, but wind up in a stalemate. Consider whether the photographs depict people “dance skating,” or “skate dancing.” The actions are the same no matter which word is dominant. This is where my thinking was when I started inline skating. Changing one to gerund (add “ing”) doesn’t make it any less a dominant or secondary verb. Your thoughts? I make no claims of expertise in grammar.
End Preamble
You may have seen or heard of it. May have even wanted to do it. Dance skate at Central Park. The CPDSA uses “dance” first with “skaters” second. I default to their use of the term since they operate the skate circle in Central Park. Whenever or however you skate there, I hope you bask in the joy that the skate circle generates. If you’ve been there, any thoughts?
I was a below average quads skater in my teens. When at a roller rink, I was stable but not graceful. Always steering clear of dance skaters who were advanced. I enjoyed skating, but not enough to backseat photography among other things.

I think I skated on quads a total of ten times in my life prior to getting my first pair of inlines. That’s when inline skating surged in popularity in the 80s to 90s. After a few months of practicing, I graduated from the safe confines of Prospect Park over to Central Park with the organized avid and devoted skaters. Dance skating to music from boom boxes in the beginning, up to live DJ sets from various DJs every Spring/Summer weekend.
Dance skating and the art of Zen.
Dance skating and the art of hand-stands.
Lezly Ziering as his Halloween alter ego. He was instrumental in building the association that sustains the circle, its importance and relevance to Central Park.
Halloween is a special time at the skate circle. It’s celebrated on the last Sunday of October when skaters dress up as their favorite alter egos to share in the fun of the end of the season.
I don’t engage in smugness, but felt a need to confirm my skating ability. Ten plus years of skating at the circle year round.
This is but a small sample of those years engrossed in skating and meeting skaters. Learn more at the Central Park Dance Skaters Association website.
