Great photos and personal history with that place. It looks and sounds massive! I'm sure some unhoused people took up spaces in there at various points.

THIS is super cool, Ken! I love stories like these and especially the personal component to it...but that large format shot is the best!

This is so cute I remember being a kid in the 90s climbing to the very top of the roof laying down looking off and then scaling the conveyer belt area on the side of the building facing towards sunset park . Man that shit was so dangerous but so fun I guess you wasn’t a kid from red hook if you didn’t do the GREY HOUSE …….

That surely is taking chances! Time flies, and the memories of those crazy days of being a kid become more cherished and sort of beautiful no matter how dangerous they were--that wasn't even thought about. If you went by yourself, it was that feeling of being you, exploring things and learning (yep, learning is part of just hanging out in places we should not have gone 🤔) Thanks for sharing your memories!

Thanks for writing a story on it growing up on the 80s I visited when I was bout 8 with my big brother who took me there it was spokey and site to see. We called it the grey house and told ghost stories. I hope they will never tear down. I hope it just becomes a landmark that can’t be destroyed. It is definitely. RED HOOK HISTORY in my childhood! 🥺

You have to have been brave to go inside with your brother. Glad to know you didn't go in alone. It's creepy all on its own, but adding a scary story--it brilliant! glad for the happy memories!
